Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge

So this past weekend SoCo trucked it on down to Baton Rouge, LA in order to play in the ultimate tournament Mardi Gras. Despite that this should be my third year going it was my first. In 2006 I was in a wedding during this weekend and in 2007 I was studying in Costa Rica. I must say that it was worth the wait, this was one of the best tourny's I've been to yet. With the help of a few Arkansas and Tulsa lady friends our team placed 3rd, losing to the tournament winners 8-10 in the semi-finals. All in all we went 6-1 and won both the friday and saturday night party.
Here's little chicken cuddling up to stevie 3000.
The weather was amazing. In the 70's all weekend with clear skies and very little wind.
On the way home though we stopped at this little truck stop around midnight or so to pee. I felt a little creeped out to say the least, especially when I saw that in order to tinkle I would have to walk into that dark void to the left of the building and find the womens restroom and whatever else might be awaiting me. I didn't go.

We've been Fogged

So while at work tonight the fog began to roll in and became increasingly denser each hour. By the time I left to go home, I couldn't see much more than 30-40 feet in front of me. I love fog.
Last night though, there was no fog at all. This is a photo from the 5th floor of the Legacy building just behind Dickson St.

Every week after Winter League around 20 of us choose a restaurant as our victim and swoop in to order massive amounts of beer and food all at the same time while being as loud as possible as well. We spent yesterday at Hogwild since it is only a few blocks from the fields and they also have a very large television with couches in front of it for watching sports. And so here we are, watching sports, wondering where our pizza is seeing as we ordered it a whole 3 minutes ago.

Not for the squeemish

So two months ago this week I played in an ultimate tournament with my new cleats which resulted in this. I knew my toe-nail had died from cleat abuse, but I didn't know how close it was to coming off until this morning when I tried putting on my sock and it just flipped up. No pain or anything, just a clean rip. A little gross I know, but kinda funny.
Eeewwwwwwww....
Before it was totally ripped off.

My mom, my step-dad, my step-brother and I all went to Las Vegas together last week for a few days of gluttonous fun. This basically entailed sitting at a buffet, sleeping, sitting at a roulette wheel, then sitting on a bus for an hour in order to sit at a roulette wheel in a different casino. Then this of course was followed by yet another buffet and more sleeping. What a great week.

Light show in the old down town where we stayed.
In front of the Luxor.
Fire show in Ceasars.
I got to see my Uncle Bill his wife and his kids, my two cousins for the first time in over 2 years.

Myself all fancied up pushing my step-brother lucas around. This was either at 9pm or 4am.

I beat about 13 kids and my mom at this game of horse racing and won the grinch.

My lucky table with my lucky number 17. I couldn't have done it without my blue dress, a pair of sparkly high heels and a fella named Angelo.

Also note the man in the background shaking his finger at me saying, "No, no, no. No camera at the roulette wheel!"

On the way to vegas I felt like i was passing over a landscape from "The Land Before Time."

This is a tank within the pool at the hotel that held a ton of fish, not to mention several sharks. Also note the slide running through the center of this tank.

Easy little hike

It was such a beautiful day today that Turk and I decided to go on a tiny little 4 mile hike around a trail near my house. The weather was amazing for sure.
Pond near my house.

It turns out there is this creepy little shack right off the trail pretty danged close to my house.

A little carwheelin' on an old foundation.

We. Are. Done.

School? We are so over it.

So as an added bonus to finishing up for the semester, I found my old lava lamp that hasn't worked in years. I decided though upon discovering it that I would give it one last chance before giving it the boot, and what do you know it works again! Brings back those memories of being 10 again like it was yesterday.

Egg Nog Challenge 2007

I arrived just in time last night to be the last sampler of both homade nogs and store bought nogs. There were 10 total, 5 homade and 5 from the store, with the winner being Southern Comfort Nog.

Then a little trip around a few blocks in circle.

Federico Garcia Lorca

So tomorrow I am to give a presentation over a Spanish literary work of my choice, and I chose to examine a poem by Federico Garcia Lorca called "Llagas de Amor." I normally wouldn't make a post about something school related, I suppose with the exception of the post directly below this one, but I really thought that this poem in particular was beautiful. So, if you like this kinda thing, I have posted the spanish version first, and then the translation of it. Be mindful though that my spanish is still somewhat rocky, so don't judge if the translation isn't perfect, just let me know and I will make the proper adjustments. I had trouble translating line 6, if anyone could help that would be great.

LLAGAS DE AMOR

Esta luz, este fuego que devora.
Este paisaje gris que me rodea.
Este dolor por una sola idea.
Esta angustia de cielo, mundo y hora.

Este llanto de sangre que decora
lira sin pulso ya, lúbrica tea.
Este peso del mar que me golpea.
Este alacrán que por mi pecho mora.

Son guirnalda de amor, cama de herido,
donde sin sueño, sueño tu presencia
entre las ruinas de mi pecho hundido.

Y aunque busco la cumbre de prudencia
me da tu corazón valle tendido
con cicuta y pasión de amarga ciencia.

SORES OF LOVE

This light, this fire that devours.
This gray landscape surrounding me.
This pain from a single idea.
This anguish from the sky, world and time.

This weeping blood decorates
Already without pulse, lubrica tea.
This weight of the sea that strikes me.
This scorpion dwelling on my breast.

They are the garland of love, bed of hurt,
Where without dream, I dream of your presence
Among the ruins of my collapsed chest.

And even though I seek the summit of prudence
Give me your veiled heart hanging
With hemlock and passion for bitter knowledge.

I just want to be done.....school refuses to end.
